Description

Our Government client based in Harthill are sourcing for a Veterinarian (OV) on a temporary basis for 6 months with possible extension.

Working hours are 25 hours per week on a rota basis over 7 days.

This is a post based on a salary of £30,652 per annum (Pro rata) PAYE plus holiday accruals, which will be paid as a day rate.

Overview of post:

The Official Veterinarian (OV) role is one of the key front-line operational roles within the business. These staff deliver Official Controls in approved premises across the Scotland, ensuring that meat produced is safe for human consumption.

The core work for the Official Veterinarian remains the delivery of Official Controls for safe meat production in Red and White meat slaughterhouses and Game handling establishments (GHE’s) within Scotland.

Main Duties:

Inspection tasks:

· Conducting Ante Mortem Inspection (AMI) of animals for slaughter and making decisions based on the fitness of animals presented for slaughter. In particular, to determine if there has been any sign that welfare has been compromised
· Assessment of Food Chain Information (FCI)
· Verification of animal welfare compliance
· Conducting Post Morten Inspection (PMI)
· Verification of compliance with Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathy (TSE) and Animal By-product (ABP) requirements
· Health Marking

Verification tasks:

· Verification of slaughter hygiene standards
· Verification of FBO compliance with microbiological criteria
· Verification of FBO traceability systems
· Verification of food safety management systems
· Verification of FBO HACCP based procedures

Action following controls:

· Collection and communication of Inspection results
· Assessment of and decision making in relation to FCI, live animals, animal welfare and meat

Technical leadership of the plant inspection team:

· Responsible for the technical leadership and performance of the plant inspection team, by providing appropriate advice, coaching, support and ensuring technical compliance
· Assessment of on-going technical, competencies of AO’s
· Cascade technical information as required
· Participation on the practical training at the plant of trainee OA’s or OV’s

Qualifications:

Membership of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (MRCVS)
OV Surgeon (Red/White) or OV Appointment

Essential Criteria:

1. Strong organisational skills, adaptable and able to deliver to agreed timescales and deadlines.
2. Excellent verbal (English) and written communication skills.
3. Ability to work well and lead a team as well as independently with minimum supervision to achieve objectives.
4. Able to build professional relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders.

Additional Information:

Must be willing to travel to various locations.

Must hold a valid driving license and own a private vehicle or be able to travel to work by other suitable means of transport.

Must be able to pass a colour blindness test.

The postholder will be expected to have/gain a current Basic Disclosure and be willing to undergo BPSS checking
