Description

ASA are looking for a Scientific Advisor for our client based in Aberdeen on a temporary basis for a period of 4 months. This is a full-time post for 37 hours per week with a daily rate of £111.00.

Our client is committed to developing an effective surveillance capability to support the identification and prioritisation of emerging risks to the Scottish food chain and the targeting of regulatory interventions aimed at ensuring food producers in Scotland comply with legislation.

The Scientific Advisor on data management, analysis and horizon scanning will lead on the analysis of science and evidence and the integration of wider data sources required to support the implementation model set out in the surveillance strategy.

Main responsibilities of the Scientific Advisor:
* Manage a centralised database which collates results of Local Authority sampling activities, and undertake analysis of this data to identify trends in food safety and authenticity;
* Lead on data analysis for Food Protection Science and Surveillance branch;
* Lead on the day to day management of the Scottish Food Sampling Database;
* Represent the company on Local Authority Liaison Groups to promote uptake and good practice, analyse data sets and lead on production of annual reports;
* Work with a wider team of analysts to implement new systems for the collation and reporting of data;
* Provide data sets and evidence needed to support other areas of the business including communications and marketing activities, media queries etc;
* Lead on the provision of relevant data sets to inform risk assessment needed to support incident response and risk management decision making on appropriate enforcement action and public health interventions;
* Manage surveillance and IT projects designed to generate data and improve the reporting of scientific information to support the company evidence base on food safety and authenticity;
* Provide strategic support for the design of surveillance activities aimed at generating evidence on the safety and authenticity of the Scottish food chain;
* Support the development of structured analytical approaches for horizon scanning which will enable the detection of emerging future risks for the Scottish food chain;
* Maintain scientific expertise in the relevant subject areas;
* Support the team leader and branch head in the production of briefing and other ad hoc technical issues, as required;

Essential requirements for the Scientific Advisor:
* BSc Honours degree in a science discipline with at least 1 year of post graduate experience in a research and data analysis role;
* Proven experience in management and analysis of complex datasets with application of analytical tools and software packages;
* Demonstrable experience in collecting, quality assuring and assessment of data/analytical information to draw out key conclusions to support decision-making;
* Proven effective written and oral communication skills, including demonstrable experience in presenting scientific/technical concepts to technical and non-technical audiences;
* Proven ability to work effectively as part of a team as well as independently to deliver specific outcomes;
* Projects and database management.
