Description

Are you a qualified Paralegal looking for a permanent post within a public sector organisation? As a Paralegal, you will take decisions on the legal merits in civil applications. You will liaise with other areas of the organisation as required, assisting with the handling of cases referred to the team. This including the provision of a front-line telephone support, and to assist in devising and developing work systems for the area. Duties:

Consider applications referred to the merits teams and take decisions on allocated cases as directed by the Senior Solicitor
Liaise with the financial assessment team in relation to cases referred to the merits area to ensure the smooth flow of cases, accurate decision making and in maintaining good performance standards
Provide relevant/appropriate information when dealing with front-line telephone queries from members of the public and members of the legal profession which are referred to the team
Assist with the creation and maintenance of guidance (mainly in relation to the decision making guidance for staff but with the possibility of occasional work on development/revisions to published information such as the civil legal aid guidance)
Liaise with Independent Checking and Quality Unit (ICQU) and IS Department as necessary
Meet with members of the public as and when necessary, to discuss applications or to fulfil other ad hoc duties as may be set by the Senior Solicitor (e.g. occasional training events)

Essential:

Excellent communication skills both, written and verbal with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to deal effectively with what can be defined as a challenging customer
Strong literacy skills: able to produce clear, concise and competent written work in a timely manner
A proactive and professional approach with ability to use own initiative and make sound judgements
Excellent organisational skills with experience of multitasking, prioritising and high attention to detail
Knowledge of the civil legal assistance process
Knowledge/familiarity with FAMS
A recognised paralegal qualification, HNC/HND in law/legal studies or a LLB/BA in law. We will also welcome applications from the suitable candidates in the condition that they would undertake a paralegal qualification within the agreed timescale
